I know you've been peeking under the hood for quite some time now using the Reflector tool, but what if you could have the 'real', 100% original source code of .NET Framework at your fingertips? What if you could debug from your code straight into .NET Framework and uncover the reason behind that weird bug?
Well, you can now. Err... almost 'now'. Microsoft just announced that they will release the source code of Base Class Libraries, ASP.NET, WinForms, and WPF later this year with a plan to release additional libraries in time. Code was released under Microsoft Reference License which allows for viewing, but not editing, copying or rebuilding.
Basically the license permits you to do two things with this code:
- You can download the source code and have a look
- You can debug into the source code using Visual Studio 2008 RTM when it becomes available. VS 2008 will request debug symbols that match the binaries being debugged from MSDN server, so you will need to have to be online to pull this off.
You can read more about it here.
